Lung Cancer Facts & Figures - 2014

In 2014 an estimated 224,000 new cases of lung cancer are expected, accounting for about 13% of cancer diagnosis. An estimated 159,000 deaths, accounting for 27% of all cancer deaths, are expected to occur. There is HOPE! The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), a clinical trial designed to determine the effectiveness of lung cancer screening in high-risk individuals, showed 20% fewer lung cancer deaths among current and former heavy smokers who were screened with spiral CT compared to standard chest x-rays. The American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) have all issued initial lung cancer screening guidelines.

The Caring Ambassadors Program suggests that you discuss with your physician what is appropriate for you and your loved ones. Start the conversation; it may save your life!
