LUNG CANCER FACTS & FIGURES

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Americans of all ethnicities.

In 2010, more than 222,000 American men and women will be diagnosed with lung cancer.

Tragically, approximately 157,000 people will lose their lives to the disease, accounting for 28% of all cancer deaths in the United States in 2010.

Every year, lung cancer kills more people in the United States than breast, colon, prostate, liver, and kidney cancer combined.

The 5-year survival rate for nonsmall cell lung cancer for all stages combined is only 16%. The 5-year survival rate is 53% for cases detected when the disease is still localized, but only 15% of lung cancers are diagnosed at this early stage. The 5-year survival rate for small cell lung cancer is 6%.
